The 2:00 A.M. Blogger

Sleep experts state that if a person cannot fall asleep after an hour or so, it is best to arise from the sleepless bed and read, pursue a favorite hobby or take a walk...at 2:25 in the morning, my love of reading has temporarily faded and quilting doesn't seem to hold my attention. I could venture out into the garden in bare feet and shorty pj's but living out in the country makes for a very dark environment and who knows what kind of furry critters one might encounter.
Besides my mind is in a whirl and that is what has prevented me from drifting peacefully off for the last two hours.
At first, I mentally planned the next morning's activities...picking the blueberries and peas that should have been done the previous night. Then thoughts moved to what a busy week it has been - constantly on the go each day which no doubt has led to this sleepless night. A feeling of being worn out and overtired prevails. Perhaps if I thought about a quilt? There is a beautiful vintage look red chintz in my sewing room that calls to me - what a fabulous border it will make...should I splurge and order that Di Ford Applique pattern I covet from Australia? Then I remember the present projects that are in the works and more gifts yet to made.
I toss and turn - the pillows get fluffed and the sheet and blanket rearranged...thoughts float to my parents and worries there and of friends near and far who face serious health issues. Mr. Outback sleeps blissfully unawares of my turmoil...our three shelties softly snore and a small window fan pulls in the cool night air.
The next thought that enters my racing mind was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back...the debacle that is going on in Congress as a group of elected officials can't reach any agreement on how to pull this country back from the brink - are we headed to the next level of economic meltdown? Why don't they grow up and play nice with each other and will I get a Social Security check in August? The pillows get fluffed again and the tossing and turning continue.
This is ridiculous, I tell myself...obviously sleep will not be visiting anytime soon so slip downstairs, start blogging and see if anyone else is awake?? Kind of doubt it - this has got to be the loneliest time of the night. That old Frank Sinatra song comes to mind..."In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning..."
Sleeping pills are not something I would seek out...perhaps seeing what other bloggers are up to?
Wow! Pomona over at Little Cottage Comforts has an amazing giveaway going on...be sure to check it out!
And I just noticed she also runs a sweet little bed and breakfast in England...if I had the where-with-all I would hop over there in a heartbeat...I bet sleep would arrive softly nestled into one her delightfully decorated rooms and the anticipation of a fresh scone and tea in the morning ...what a lovely thought...I will try to keep that image as I climb the stairs and once again fluff the pillows and hopefully at long last drift off to sleep.

Pat

I will probably look like this in the morning...

  1. Oh gosh Pat I hope you don't look like that in the morning, mind you that's about how I feel some mornings when insomnia has visited for the night..
I've been known to visit blogger friends in the middle of a long lonely night too and I've also baked scones at 3am..! Can't do cakes as I always want to sleep before it's cooked, scones are just about the right length of time and if I'm still not sleepy I get to eat them... :o)

  3. Not being able to fall asleep is a horrible feeling. When I went through "troubles" in my life, I would wake up every night at 3:30 am, sometimes I think just to see if it was 3:30, and then I could never go back to sleep. I really disliked the way I felt during that time.

Wish this "hot" spell would soon be over - I still try to go to my room each day, just not doing much since I finished my UFO for July. Golden Girls will be over Monday and we are making Schlep bags (Sentimental Studio pattern) for Christmas gift bags. Still no lookers for the house. Judy C sends her best to you.

  4. It's such a pity you are not closer! My guests tell me that the bed is the most comfortable that they have ever slept in, and our little country lane is so quiet that many of them oversleep! I hope that you have a better night tonight - I sometimes have trouble sleeping because my thoughts are racing ahead and I usually find that mindfulness breathing will calm me down and send me off again.

  5. Oh dear, Pat, big sympathy from me. I don't sleep very well most nights, but last night slept through - I felt like singing the Hallelujah Chorus when I awoke and saw that it was morning. I've been following (along with the rest of the world) the shenanigans in your Congress, and pray that things will get sorted out. In the meantime, I hope you win that giveaway and have a good sleep tonight!

  6. I'm so sorry you had a rough night. :( It's never fun when it happens, let alone the worries in our lives tend to creep into our thoughts. I wish I could do something to give you company, and have a nice conversation! Give Grandma and Grandpa a hug from us, as we think of them often. I really hope our idiotic Congressmen will get their heads out of the sand and think clearly and wisely on the situation we are in. They are so greedy. Never listen to us citizens and therefore we suffer, and they reap the rewards and bonuses. Blah. Keeping you in my thoughts - love and miss you guys!! I'll be home soon and we can have that muchly needed Amaretto Slush and grilled dinner. :)

  7. Poor TO! I don't have many sleepless nights (Knock on wood!), but I do know that once it starts, it is hard to get back to sleep. It's also bad when dogs and husband are sleeping soundly and you can't get to sleep. I crashed last night at 7:30 PM. I had been really doing pretty well getting back to the right time zone and I just dropped over last night. The Herbal Husband tried several times to wake me, but I was just out! The lack of government and caring for the citizens of this nation is enough to make for sleeplessness, but it doesn't seem to matter who you vote for, the result is the same. Hope sleep comes to you tonight, TO!

  10. The picture you paint is all too familiar to me. I read a bit more, check for emails, look out of the window, have a paracetamol (they often help me to sleep), read a bit more; finally, i go downstairs, fetch a glass of sherry which I drink sitting on my bed (Beloved and I have separate bedrooms, I can be as active as I like), read a bit more and hopefor the best.

And in the morning I really do look like the woman in your picture.
