Halcyon days....???

Well - on occasion...like winning this fabulous jellyroll from Barbara Brackman recently - Lately Arrived From London - a collection long coveted but not available at our LQS(s)...

Our quilt study group is headed to the new Wisconsin Quilt Museum in Cedarburg, later this coming week...will try to get some photos and report back to you. Of course, a "few" quilt shop stops along the way so maybe additional yardage can be located from the Lately Arrived From London grouping...more later.

Read on for less than "halcyon days."

Our guest room is undergoing a total refreshing...selling the "somewhat" uncomfortable hide-a-bed sofa. A new queen size bed coming in, decluttering, and freshly painted walls. With a bum shoulder and arthritic hands, most of my painting days are behind me. We have a young painter who has taken control of this project...he moves like lightning, and really, really loves hard rock music...Now I know how the phrase "boom box" got its name...our walls are flexing with the sounds bouncing off of them...this is my Saturday morning. But, a small price to pay to have someone paint ceilings and walls.
What started the whole project?

...A poor plumbing job when the house was built finally did its number on the guest room ceiling - a slow leak from the shower over the years, unknown to us until things became visible. In addition to being a qualified rotary and fixed wing pilot in another life, Mr. Outback is also a journeyman pipefitter. He has saved us bundles correcting someone's earlier incompetency. After cutting an opening in the ceiling to get at the  pipe fittings, installing new, the ceiling is being repaired and the painting can begin...
NOTE BOOM BOX ON FLOOR - RIGHT NEXT TO MY SEWING ROOM!!
Added compost to our 6 raised beds; finishing digging up sod (Mr. Outback was truly, totally exhausted) and pouring gravel and placing new stone edging around the house - moving furniture, spring cleaning...where are those Halcyon Days promised for retirement? And where is the time for any sewing?

Slow progress - but getting to the end...3 borders are done and onto the 4th...soon, soon, soon...
LEFT THE EXTRA LENGTH BIAS STEMS ON - AM NOT CUTTING ANYTHING OFF YET!!!!

I am so thankful each day to have such good friends to share frustrations and also laughter with. What blessings they are. And speaking of friendships...

When you say your prayers tonight would you put in a good word for a dear friend and stitching buddy - "Dee" - she is really going through a rough spell following surgery...know there are a lot of positive thoughts floating around out there and she sure could use some sent her way...Thank you.

Have a good weekend.

Thank you Marilyn!

  1. Prayers for Dee on the way! Good luck with your remodel, I know it's messy but well worth the end results.

  2. This is definitely not calm, tranquil, happy or carefree and I do so feel for the overwhelming situation this must have caused you and yours. Just when we had everything ready to put the house on the market, the dish washer stopped working ... Some days are just a waste of clean clothes and good make up. Hopefully warm and sunny days are ahead of you. Thinking of you. Judy C

  5. How about some of us sending her a fat quarter or some little stitchy thing to cheer her up? Nothing helps like getting a little package in the mail. I would be more than happy to send your friend a little get well something-just give me an address and it will be in the mail in the morning!

  6. Can you send the painter, his boom box and the hard rock my way? Although we bought a new car and The Herbal Husband is talking new carpeting for the steps and landing. Will take whatever bone he is throwing, but the carpeting was supposed to be for the end of all of the projects! Oh, well, I'm hearing "I Can't Get No (Satisfaction!)" in my ear! Carry on TO. Splendid job as usual. Prayers for your stitching buddy, Dee. xxoo Nancy

  7. Let Dee know we are all thinking of her.

Can't wait to see the quilt when it's all together! It's really going to be beautiful.

Here's to warmer weather and an end to your home repair project!

  8. What a lot you've got going on, Pat. Whoever said that retirement means slowing down, taking it easy, was talking through his hat!

  9. I do not like the descriptiveness of updating or repairing rooms in our home but I sure do love the look of clean walls and a new look! I have been doing more of that at my youngest daughters home, trying to help her get ready for the new baby due any day. I have always been the painter here. Hubs actually did it for a living when he was a young man and does not like to paint at all. But I have talked him into it a bit more this past couple of years. This home we bought a few years ago has much higher ceilings then the home we sold and lived in for almost 30 years. I am not a lover of heights. Did I see you on Susan Branch's facebook under the pen pal area? I have signed up but I cannot seem to be able send anyone a note on facebook for the request. Have you found a pen pal yet?

  11. Pat -- trying to send you a FB message but the info has no link as you have your settings in place. Wanted to see if you are still open for the FOSB penpal idea -- let me know over on FOSB on the initial post where there are close to 150 comments at the moment or respond to my FB inbox -- by going to my profile. I'm off to explore this wonderful, tempting blog of yours. Dottie

  12. Ha, I came back to see if you answer comments here and see that when I hit the spell correction I picked a word that I did not at all mean to use. Was in a hurry because I had Grands visiting. The word should have been disruptions...

  13. It's all go chez Taylorsoutback, I see. Just think how beautiful it will all be when it's done. I hate workmen around the house but they are on their way to us too. Grrrrr.

I'll be sending a few healing thoughts and prayers in your general direction, pass them on to your friend, would you please.

  14. Oh, boy, lots of stuff going on at your place. Good thing your hubby is so handy. We paid someone to paint for us last year and it is amazing how fast they get things done compared to me and my husband. It was worth it for us too.
