Quilting with A/C...

Oh my goodness...I do not tolerate hot weather very well. Our lawns our crunchy and dried; in the vegetable gardens, the long storage onions are ready for gathering a month ahead of schedule & all the pea vines have given up despite frequent watering.

As much as we appreciate having central air, it gets claustrophobic quickly. We have just returned from 6 days in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and even there it was quite warm. I had looked forward to relaxing outside our RV doing some hand stitching, but instead stayed inside with the A/C units running. Our furry shelties could only be comfortable that way too.

So, taking advantage of the downtime, the binding on my Scrappy House quilt got completed...

And I can officially call this one Done! It is a two for one quilt if you check out the backing...

I also got started on handquilting my Brimfield Block quilt but even that felt too warm despite the cool insides of the RV...

Thank goodness for a nearby friend who just happens to have literally 100’s of hand quilting stencils that she let me go through and pick out a set with 2 different sizes. Stencils for hand quilting are like a dinosaur - nobody stocks them anymore.

When time permitted, all the trimming and squaring up was finished for Midnight At The Pumpkin Patch...

Once we got back home, the quilt top went together much faster and the addition of the wool appliques added...

With the continuation of our warm weather pattern and staying inside, will be doing a buttonhole stitch around the wool edges...love those Valdani colors! This has been a very fun quilt to work on - something different from my other projects and a way “to get my feet wet” working with wool. When I figure out how to machine quilt this, will show the whole thing...I am kind of stumped.

Honestly, this hot weather can go anytime...give me 65-70 degree days with the windows open...

Happy stitching everyone.

Pat

  1. Your zinnias are gorgeous! Sadly today it's 68-70 degrees but the humidity is over 90% .. in the house! Yuck. Your scrappy house quilt is wondervul, I love how you set it and the dark borders really make it just perfect. Haven't worked with wool yet, maybe someday. The pumpkin patch quilt might just be the inspiration I need!

  3. Such a wonderful finish! Congratulations! And the backing is perfect. It is starting to feel like Fall here, so your Pumpkin Patch tops feels about right. I have a kit for some wool applique, I really want to try it. Your flowers look lovely despite the hot weather!

  4. I know what you mean about feeling clostraphobic by being shut in all the time. I don't think we've been as hot as you have been. Congrats on the completion of your Scappy Houses. Is that a Red Wagon pattern in the back? Cute pumpkins. Hopefully, wool and pumpkins bring cooler weather your way. Your zinnias look happy!!

  5. I think you were quite productive, despite the hot weather (I am sorry I cannot say the same after a summer that has never been that hot before, here in the Netherlands). Love your scrappy houses quilt!!! And the pumpkin-quilt is going to be a beauty as well. And your planning is just right, just before fall.

  6. Love your finishes, beautiful! I am with you, we returned early from a camping trip that I was looking forward to sewing and knitting outside our trailer. Instead we were inside with the AC running because it was over 100 degrees...ugh. I am looking forward to cool, even cold days thank you very much.

  7. I just found your blog and see you hand quilt and sometimes travel in an RV - I do too. I don't do any quilting while on the road as my space is kind of small but I do a lot of hand piecing and EPP while on the road - I do not care to run the A/C in the camper but we did have to off and on when we were in northern MN and WI back in June - mainly to get some of the humidity lower from the rain - leaving soon for the Rocky Mountain areas and hope for nice weather and not hot!!

  8. I'm with you for sure! I do not function in the heat and humidity. This has been the worst summer I can remember here in Maine. We finally have rain today and hopefully cooler temps will follow! I wish the same for you. I did stay inside over the weekend with the window AC and finished quilting my August mini. Come on Fall!

  10. I can't deal with heat either! I love fall and spring. You have made good progress on your quilts!
I stock up on stencils when I see them, mainly at shows or online. I recently sent some tomthe Netherlands for a friend.
Stay cool, fall is around the corner.
