3rd week into The Big Leap...

Keeping up with Doreen's February SAL...and ready for the final reveal...

Also took a few minutes to double check that my on-the-go project pouch was ready. Mr. Outback gets to have his 3rd nerve block for a troublesome neck/spine area first thing tomorrow morning. We have an early wake up call to be at the hospital by 7:45 am. and we live about 45 minutes away. While he gets to have all that fun stuff done, I hope to do a little more stitching on my Benjamin Biggs border. I would much rather stitch while worrying rather than choosing between 3 year old magazines or a TV tuned to some silly program in the waiting room. It is much better to find a quiet little chair near good light...

Wishing each of you a good week as we head towards the end of another month and Spring is one step closer for our part of the world.

Homework assignment completed...

.....it has been cold this month in our neck of the woods...except for visiting my Mom regularly, and a necessary trip to the big city to search for a new range (after 20 years, ours was saying, "I have baked my last loaf of bread & simmered my last kettle of soup") you can find me snug in the sewing room. Doreen over at Aunt Reen's Place gave us our new homework assignment for this week...in case you have not checked it out - go to her February SAL - The Big Leap. Very fun!

First week we cut; now we are sewing, subcutting and sewing and getting a feel for how our jelly roll choices are going to turn out. Liking the mellowness of my blocks - I tend to work with a warm color palette - give me cream, toffee, caramel, or coffee for backgrounds and that is my happy place. So my 8 Set A blocks are done.

....and looking forward to next week's assignment for Set B...
Besides Mr. Outback and I will need time to get a degree in how to operate the new range.. Good grief, new appliances are sophisticated! We replaced our frig (also 20 years old) last year too...did you know you can program these things with your cellphone? Husband thinks that is cool - I ask - why??? Apparently you can "talk" to the stove too...can I call them both up and have the frig put a casserole in the oven for me and watch it bake? I would not want to get a bill for that extra texting data charge! And to think my Grandma cooked on a wood stove - best food ever...Just hope the 20 year old dishwasher holds up - truly do not like washing lots of dishes...

Have a good week everyone - and may everything run smoothly in your own kitchen...

PS And yes! I was able to find additional border fabric - terrific 3 day service from www.betterquiltkit.com. New to me but a very positive experience. You never know where you might find extra yardage for an out of print fabric...

February SAL...

...How perfect...Aunt Reen is offering a well timed SAL for February - often a snowy month for those of us in Wisconsin. Beginning today, February 7th, Doreen will post instructions for The Big Leap! Every Sunday throughout February, new directions will be posted on her blog. I love that we will have a completed quilt top by the end of the month (this being a Leap Year with an extra day).

We are using a jelly roll and 5 1/2 yards background for the large quilt or a partial jelly roll and 3 1/2 yards background for the smaller lap size.

I have decided to go with the smaller size and hopefully add borders - here is why!

About 2 - 3 years ago, I won this gorgeous jelly roll from Barbara Brackman - the collection is Lately Arrived From London.

My background, from our LQS, is P & B Textiles Bella Suede - isn't it well named? Soft, subtle and oh so lovely. Just a hint of floral design...

After winning the jelly roll, I added some yardage from the same collection - among the pieces on my shelf is this butterscotch pillar print which is calling out to be used in the border - problem? Only 2 yards - what was I thinking? I believe I have found 2 sources for additional yardage - hoping the quilting fairies are looking out for me! (Note to self - buy a minimum of 3 yards in future)

So that is the plan - and now off to start cutting - the February clock is ticking - good thing this is a Leap Year...in a quilter's world, an extra day really helps!
